But overall this word is very uncommon and is not used in daily conversations

one of those weird plural exceptions (we stole the word from another language and kept its plural rules) - most native speakers probably haven't heard the singular form "alga" before so I wouldn't worry about remembering it 😅

A: You can use both but the use of "clumps" is more descriptive. Personally, I think it gives you a greater visual in your mind. Groups is a very generic term, a bit vague

"They live depending on each other" is OK.
However, "Their lives depend on each other" sounds better.
