A: It might help to practice usage by 'reverse engineering'. Basically these terms are a way to package a sentence into just a noun (which can then be used in a more complex sentence). The preposition to use will become clearer with practice...

I got a peanut *from* a jar.
>> the jar *from* which I got a peanut

Then you can use these phrases for a complete sentence...

(The store to which I went) didn't have anything on sale.

(The many great deeds of which I heard) rolled around in my dreams last night.

(The jar from which I got a peanut) is now completely empty.

BTW, it works with 'whom' also.

I spoke to a man.

The man to whom I spoke wore red shoes.

I got a kiss from a girl.
>> a girl from whom I got a kiss

The girl from whom I got a kiss seems to have disappeared.

A: In the U.S. "college" is any almost school of higher education beyond high school. It includes universities and institutes. I find it rather amusing that Brits and Aussies get pissed off if we don't make that distinction, so I always make it a point to ask them where they went to college.
