We call "check cards" debit cards in the US.

And I'm not sure if you're using the first part in the same context at the hotel, but I personally would not say that to a hotel employee.

The first section would be more like a bank employee telling a customer how debit cards and credit cards work. It would seem kind of rude to explain that to a hotel employee.
