Present Continuous: this tense describes action which is going on at the time of speaking = They ARE EATING in the kitchen.
Present Continuous can express temporary action that may NOT be happening at the time of speaking = Bill IS DRIVING his friend’s car while his own car is in the shop.
Present Continuous uses the Present Participle: eating, driving

Past Continuous: this tense expresses uncompleted action of the past = His mother WAS CRYING.
Or Past Continuous can also talk about persistent habits of the past = They WERE usually SHOUTING at each other.
Past Continuous uses the Present Participle: crying, shouting, eating, driving

spelling: CONTINUOUS (not ‘continues’)
