A: Familiar to us means the speaker is familiar with the object: Ex. The house is familiar to us. : Us being the speaker and house being the object.

Familiar with us means the object is familiar with the speaker: Ex. The cat is familiar with us : The cat is the object and us is the speaker.

Person b: wow, this tastes familiar (used in a sense of nostalgia)! Like when I was a child!

“This place seems familiar” (you’ve been there before/seen it)
“I’m familiar with chess” (you know how to play it)

A: "Familiar with" and "knowledgeable about" both mean you know a lot about a subject. However, you can only use "familiar with" to say you know a person well, or a place well.

Correct: "She's very knowledgeable about music" / "She's very familiar with music"

Incorrect: "I'm knowledgeable about the downtown area"
Correct: "I'm familiar with the downtown area"

Incorrect: "I'm knowledgeable about him"
Correct: "I'm familiar with him"

Also, "knowledgeable about" isn't a very common phrase. You can just say "to know a lot about": "She knows a lot about music."

Similar is something that is close to the same.
"A frog is similar to a toad."

A: They are both similar, however "familiar with" is considered being less knowledgeable than "savvy and knowledgeable about".

If you are familiar with something, I expect you to only know a little bit about it.

However, if you are savvy and knowledgeable about something, I expect you to know a lot more and possibly be a specialist or very informed about it.
