For example, “He’s always unpleasant towards us”. Synonyms for ghastly include horrible, awful, and terrifying, and it be used to describe something frightening or grim, like a crime scene or a scary story.

A: both can be used interchangeably in my opinion, but otherwise I'd say the word 'ghastly' is used when you are shocked or scared by something, and the word 'awful' is used when you think something is bad or horrible.

I told her I had seen an awful picture online (The person had seen a horrible picture that made them feel bad or not good)

Dreadful: something that causes suffering, fear, unhappiness, an action that one hates doing, poor or bad
"This homework is dreadful." (I hate doing my homework; it's difficult, and I'm not enjoying it at all).
"His manners are dreadful." (He is not very well-behaved. He is rude.)
"I cut my finger and the pain is dreadful!" (It hurts so much!)

I would say that terrifying is most used when speaking. Lousy is also quite common as is dreadful. Ghastly and frightful you probably won't hear as often.
