In common expressions, we "last" more often. (Go back to the last page, etc).

Early: happening or done before the usual or expected time/happening, belonging to, or done near the beginning of a particular time or period

Let's say you're at school in 5th period and you want to talk about how fun 4th period was.
"My previous period was so much fun!"
"My early period was so much fun!" Well, what early period are you talking about? Was it a period you had in the morning? Was it 1st period?

Also, "My early period" just doesn't sound right. Why you may ask? Well, as a native english speaker like myself you just kind of know what is and isn't right. So I couldn't 100% explain as to why it doesn't sound right.

However, if you wanted to talk about something specific in 4th period (and you're in 5th period) you could say:

"Earlier in 4th period, my friend said..."
