I think maintain is the effort we do to keep something as it is (for example: to make the temperature remains constant, to make her kindness remains in their hearts etc)

On the other hand, Remaining is used when the quantity of things is known to us:

A: There is really no difference! Remain sounds a little more formal but I don't think there's a situation where one would be ok and the other not.

In normal speech people tend to use stay. Eg, stay there.

Also, remain in the plural has another meaning which is 'left over', eg, What remains of our dinner? Meaning What is left of our dinner, or the famous novel The Remains of the Day

A: They mean the same thing. They are synonyms of one another. However, there can be a difference in use. I would use "remain" in more formal speech and "stay" in any type of speech, but others may not.

For example, if I were writing to a superior about an issue I would say "I would like to remain in San Francisco, rather than transfer to Los Angeles." just because it sounds more proper.

Although, there is nothing wrong with saying "I would like to stay in San Francisco, rather than transfer to Los Angeles."

But I wouldn't say to my good friend " I want to remain in the car when you get to the store."
That would be considered very unnatural for familiar speech.
