The closest concept I can think of now, for professional/work situations, is that of the new employee being "in training".

The better the company, the longer and more official the training program will be. Some companies truly suck at this necessary support period, and handle it very sloppily and half-assed. But the ideal is what you described; the new employee has a specific status: "Trainee" (or some company euphemism).

While working in that designation, the trainee works almost constantly with a trainer/mentor nearby, is probably at first shown the simpler tasks, and then eased into the more complicated responsibilities.

So, when a new hire seems nervous, I would - and have - said things like:
- "Ah, don't worry. You're still in training; they won't bite you. Just give your best!"
