It really depends on what book you found it from, and if it was someone speaking that line. If someone was speaking that line, then it'll depend on whether or not the person has a problem with speech, or just cut off and then continued. But if none of those apply, then yes, the extra "was a" is a typo.

Typo. Although repeating two words in a row is not always a typo, it is in this case. (also the exception I mentioned doesn't apply to "was" - an example of when it applies: "I would have never listened to him had I known that that was the case" - the second "that" is referring to something which you would then need more context to figure out).
