"Whether Mr. Akbar’s fall sets off a wider reckoning within the country’s political class will largely determine whether India’s #MeToo movement leads to lasting change in the country. " (Mr. Akbar is an Indian minister who resigned after being accused of sexual harassment.)

It sounds like Mr Akbar is in trouble, and I'm going to miss out on the Star Wars reference... The "wider reckoning" is like because he's been caught, others may well get caught as a consequence, see "witch hunt"

To me it would mean something like further implications or that it may have wider affects within the country.

Yes, adding to other comments, “reckoning” here means a judgement, or investigation (ending in a judgement). If it’s a wider reckoning, it means more things/people will be investigated.
