昨年 sounds more formal. So when you write an essay or something, or give a formal speech, 昨年 would be preferred.
On the other hand, if you use it in casual situations, it sounds too formal.
Actually, we don't say 昨年 so often in daily life, but we hear and see it a lot on TV, newspaper, and various articles.
