I was wondering to what extent you can exchange "mutual" and common.
Terms like mutual/common friend/enemy
should work with both in my opinion, but what about something like
common currency (like the Euro, for example)
could you also say "mutual currency"? Comparing the google results, it does not seem overly common though.
Maybe someone could also explain what the actual difference between these two words is?
Thank you in advance.

If your country and mine shared the euro as currency. Then we mutually use the same currency. The euro is common like the U.S. dollar. But they are not the same.

The word "Common" is used for things that are often used/said/done. As for the word "mutual", it is used for things that are the same.
For example:
Mutual Friends on Facebook are friends that the same.
And common places to eat at are places that are often gone to.

Well, I know that "common" also means something like "normal" or "usual", but I feel it sometimes also means something like "joint ....", which seems very similar to "mutual".
I came up with a case where I feel that I can actually tell the difference (and both versions seem natural to me). Here's how I understand them:
mutual interest: means, that two persons/organizations are interested in each other .
common interest: this refers to an interest in something else, that two parties share
If that's correct, the difference would be in "reciprocal" (mutual) and "sharing one ..." (joint). Would you agree with my interpretations of the phrases?
regards, Halala

Mutual interests does not mean two people that are interested in each other. But two people who have the same interests.
Common interests is when two people have an interest that people are often interested in.
