@adaren Both of them can be used for negative and positive things.
Basicly you can think of "on top of that" as being somewhat like the word also. It's just that it adds more emotion to the sentence.
"I had to by eggs, tomatoes, and on top of that I had to get cheese."
This simply means they also had to get cheese, but it sounds like they are irritated they had to get the cheese as well.
"I got cake, presents, and on top of that I got to see a movie!"
This sounds like that are really excited to have been able to also get to go to the movies.
Furthermore can be used the same way, but I will say further more can be used in a less emotional way, as most more formal words can. Also find it's used in books as part of the narration more often.
"for homework I would like you to read 3 more chapters of the textbook, furthermore, I expect you to write a page about what you learned"
Furthermore when spoken... maybe it's that it sounds more stuck up or intelligent depending on the crowd your mixing with xD So I only use it in writing my stories.

Both "furthermore" and "on top of that" can be used to say that there is more about the topic your talking about. However furthermore is used more in formal texts or conversations. Most people in a casual setting would say "on top of that". Example: "I had to write a 100 page essay, on top of that I had to read 6 chapters of the textbook!"
"He was cold and tired, and, furthermore, he was hungry." This is correct. But it sounds weird in normal conversation. Normally someone would say "He was cold and tired, and on top of that, he was hungry." The first one you might see in novels, but aside from that the only time I ever have heard it is when someone is talking more formally. (a professor in a university class for example)
"on the top of that" would only be used to say something like "The cat is on the top of that cabinet." The addition of "the" changes the meaning completely.
Hope that helps! :)

on top of that*
you can pretty much use them the same. on top of that would be used in a situation where something is maybe more bothersome, but not always.

Oh I should say also, you can use them both for more positive things too! Like "I got cake, presents, and on top of that I got to see a movie!"
