If your boyfriend asks you what you what you thought of his speech, you might explain that you have to tell him the truth (that you didn't hear it) because you won't pretend that you were listening.
If you and your friend were listening to your brother and his girlfriend fighting through the door of his room and your parents come into the house, you may tell your friend that you're going to pretend that you weren't listening so that she does the same.
