I guess the answer is B as this person has a similar experience to Hannah's, but I don't really understand the difference between 'sympathy' and 'empathy'.

sympathy: I felt bad because I saw that she felt bad. Sympathy is also situational.
empathy: I can tell that she felt bad. Empathy is a property that a person has, their capacity to understand other people's feelings.
e.g.
I have a lot of empathy, so I always know what someone is feeling. when she fell over, I instantly felt sympathy for her.

I think it's simply more common to say it that way in English: You're being empathetic by showing sympathy. - But I don't think it's wrong to say you're showing empathy, it's just less common.
