"past" is an adjective, "the past" is a noun, so "past" describes things that occurred before the present time, while "the past" refers to the time period before the current time.
"I fixed my mistakes in the past" = I fixed my mistakes, and I fixed them during a period of time that occurred before now

The past refers to the time that came before now, before the present moment. And can also mean "you have gone past your destination" (you have gone too far, you have gone past the place you were meant to go).
