mourn is the action,
you can say mourn for *noun*
For example “mourn for the dead”

The both mean the same thing, but you’d use them differently depending on how you’re using it in a sentence.
For example:
The man needs time to mourn.
or
The man needs time to mourn for his wife.
You can also say:
The man is in mourning for his wife.

Thank you but why is it usually "mourn someone's passing" and not "mourn for someone's passing"?

@Mnhyufghj67 both would make sense, but to sound more natural you would only use the verb “mourn” + the “for” preposition when replacing “someone” with a person in particular.
ex: mourn someone’s passing vs. mourn for his wife’s passing
