It's just a name :) That would be like asking why there is an "O'" in O'Connel or O'Donelly.

It means son, it's another version of Mac. My surname is MacLeod, Mac means son, so Macleod is son of Leod (norse for ugly!).
McMorris would also mean son of Morris.
It's a very old naming tradition.

As kamiiru says, it's a very old naming tradition. It was originally used by Gaelic-speaking people in Scotland and Ireland. Now most people just inherit their father's name.
