A domestic animal lives NEAR your house or INSIDE your house. Outside the house are barnyard animals that live inside fenced areas, such as horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, sheep. These are domesticated, not wild. They are distinct from WILD animals that cannot live inside fences: wolves, cougars, coyotes.
Completely domesticated animals can live inside the house, especially cats and dogs.

A domestic animal is one that is trained and lives with humans in their home. More accurately called a Domesticated animal, but commonly and simply called a pet.
