Complementary is an (adjective 形容词)- something free (because of something else)
(there is also a Noun 名词 complements (always plural)
something that is complementary is free
但是
something that is free is not complementary
When you travel on an airplane, they will usually give you complementary water or nuts. (you get the complementary nuts because you paid for the plane ticket)
If you go to a really nice restaurant, and tell the waiter, “Please tell the chef that the food was amazing. It really was delicious.”
The waiter might come back with a free dessert saying, “compliments of the chef” (because you complimented the chef, the chef decided to give you a free dessert.)
to compliment = to say something nice to someone
to complement = to complete, to make something better
(complement has the word complete: easy way to remember😄)
例句:Sweets/desserts really complement tea.
Of course this is not so common to get a free, complementary dessert, but a chef at a nice restaurant might do this.(if you tell him you love his food)
Another example is when I was in US, I used to go to a middle eastern restaurant. (Persian restaurant)
I always told the chef how delicious his food was. Because I complimented him(I’m a boot licker 😂), he used to bring rice from the bottom of the pan.
I don’t know if you have this in China but after cooking rice for a long time, there is crunchy rice at the bottom of the pan. Persians love the crunchy rice. They put some stew on the side and you can eat it with the crunchy rice.
stew like 炖
The waiter could say, “complements of the chef,” when he brings the crunchy rice or dessert. (I also want to say this phrase is the only time you hear the noun “complements” almost always it is “complementary (something/nuts/water/coffee/dessert etc etc)
If you are buying clothes at an expensive store, they might give you complementary coffee or water.
It does mean free but it is free because of something else...
Free just means no price. It costs nothing. Maybe you are moving and you do not want to bring your furniture. You could ask your neighbor:
A: I’m moving today, do you want any of this furniture?
B: How much?
A: It’s free. (correct)
B: It’s complementary(incorrect)
如果你还有问题,尽管问我吧。

sometimes if you go to a restaurant, instead of saying, “tell the chef the food was delicious” etc etc
You, yourself, can say, “compliments to the chef.”
It means send my compliment or praise of how good delicious his food was.
When the waiter comes back with something free, he will say, “complements of the chef.” It means something complementary and free from the chef.
It should be “complements from the chef.” but people say “of the chef.”
The reason the waiter does not say, “compliments of/from the chef,” is because the chef is not praising the customer.
However, if you search google trends, you will learn that nearly every incorrectly spells it, “compliments of the chef” because the average English speaker probably doesn’t know they are different words.
Both words are pronounced exactly the same.
I looked at the history of the word “compliment” and it used to have the same meaning “complement.” But somehow “compliment” changed to “praise” instead of “something free or extra, like complement.”
You could argue “compliments of the chef“ is also correct because the chef is praising you for praising him, so here is something for free.
So confusing haha 😂😄
如果你还有问题,尽管问我吧。我总是喜欢你的问题。
