I practice to use semicolons in English composition lately, a kind native speaker gave me the advice like this. I somehow understood, but want to know more detail or nuance about "style" and "opinion". Would you tell me something of additional information?

Some punctuation can be used or avoided depending on the opinion and writing style of the author.
For example, the "Oxford comma" is a last comma written in a list of 3+ items, just before the conjunction. Not everyone uses this comma, but it CAN change the meaning of a sentence
