I’ve seen this sentence in a youtube video titled “How to pronounce heard vs. hard in standard British English: word of the day #29.” at 4:30 of the video.

It means to ask something ahead of time. Earlier than would be necessary.
Example:
I know your plans fill up quite quickly and that's why I'm asking you early- Can we go and watch a movie on the 29th?
It's better to ask too early, than to ask too late.
