How unnatural is it to not use "any" with negative sentences?

Context: "There were some sale items but I didn't have any money."

Would it sound unnatural if there wasn't "any" in the sentence? (I didn't have money.)

I was wondering if I have to use "any" in questions as well, such as:

Do you have any pets? vs Do you have pets?

Is it best to use "any" at all times in negative sentences and in questions?
