There isn't a great way to say this with your original wording.
I would say, "Don't pick your tomatoes before they're ripe". That's a popular Southern American euphemism that means "Don't do something too early. Give it time to mature".

Actually, my friend has offered a great job, so technically he's in the position not to wait for something better but he's got a chance more near him. Then, it also could be more helpful for him moving next year:) I could just say "That's a wise choice" whatever, but I was wondering if there's any natural and fun American expression way to talk :)
