Let's try and work together as a people on this planet for a change, rather than putting each other down and ripping everybody apart.

Here is a problem concerning grammar, why does the author use "putting" and "ripping" here but not "put" or "rip"?

The phrase is in present tense, and the verbs are present principal form.
This is because the action is continuous, we currently are, and will be in the future putting, and ripping each other down.
