"ettei ollut tasapeli" on its own means the same as "ettei vaan ollut tasapeli"
but adding "vaan" still makes it sound more natural, does this make any sense? 😂
but if "ettei ollut tasapeli" is the subordinate clause (ex. "Hän sanoi, ettei ollut tasapeli"), the ettei would change into "it wasn't"
Okay... this is harder to explain than I thought...
remember!
"ettei" is just "että ei/jotta ei" smashed together...
...so basically if the "ettei" comes after a comma, it means "so that" or "wasn't/weren't, etc."
and if it's just on it's own, it means "are you sure? (because I have a feeling it's not like this)"

In most (pretty much always all) cases "ettei" is the same as "jotta ei" or "että ei":
Ole varovainen, ettei käy huonosti. = Be careful so that nothing bad will happen.
BUT it can also have another meaning. There's no translation for it in english but it has the same meaning as something like "Hmm... no way" or "Are you sure?":
Ettei vaan ollut tasapeli. = "Are you sure it wasn't a tie? (because I have a feeling it was)"

@awae Thank you very much! That helps a lot.
In the sentence "Ettei vaan ollut tasapeli" does the phrase "Ettei vaan" = Are you sure? Or just Ettei = Are you sure?

oh... it's hard to explain since it doesn't actually mean that, there's just no better translation 😅
literal translation would be:
ettei vaan/että ei vaan = that not just
...makes no sense in english, right?
but I guess in this case it has to include the "vaan"
although "ettei ollut tasapeli" can have the same meaning as "ettei VAAN ollut tasapeli"
I'm sorry for explaining it so badly, maybe someone else can back me up 😄

@awae Thanks. Let me see if I have it straight!
So... "Ettei vaan ollut tasapeli?" would mean, roughly, "Are you sure it wasn't a tie?"
But the statement "Ettei (vaan) ollut tasapeli." would mean something like "There was no tie." or "It was not a tie."
Am I on the right track?
