If is maybe I did. It implies you might not have helped your mom.
When is saying you definitely did. The action was taken.

She gave me apples every Monday. (Past tense - happened)
When I helped my mom she gave me a star. (Past tense - talking about something that happened)
If I help my mom then maybe she would give me money. (Possibility)

@Rohan45 you have broken too many parts. Grammar breaks when you add too many clauses. Try this.
WHEN I was a child, I helped my mom. She would often give me a snack AFTERWARDS.

@Rohan45 too me, it's too wordy. Usually academia suchs as IELTS or TOEFL love their complicated wording structure and over explain stuff. Yes, there is a level of writing and understanding that is required at high or college. You learn how to write in school. However, you will never write like that again after you graduate (unless you're a writer or in research). I wrote 50-100 page papers for college and never used that form of writing again after I graduated.
