Prone isn't a verb, it's an adjective
The structures are as follows:
to tend to do sth
to have a tendency to do sth
to be prone to doing sth

They both convey the same meaning - something that is likely to happen.
Their structure in a sentence is different.
He is prone to falling.
He tends to fall.
