I'm studying causative expressions and I found the sentence "The coach ran the athletes around the track". It means that the coach caused the athletes to run around the track in a non-coercive way.
Several studies have reported that we can say "run the athletes around the track" but cannot "jog the athletes around the track."
I want to know how native speakers feel about this difference. Please share your ideas or impressions about this difference. Your ideas don't have to be logical. I just want kind of your feeling.

To me, "run the athletes around the track" sounds like the coach is making them do it and standing on the sidelines, whereas "jog the athletes around the track" sounds like he is personally leading them in a jog around the track, rather than just watching.

Ran/jogged can both be used. Present tense (run/jog) would be incorrect though.

Personally, if someone said "jog the athletes around the track" in normal conversation, I wouldn't bat an eyelid.
But if you specifically ask about that sentence, honestly, I'd feel a bit uncertain :P
I wonder how those studies came to that conclusion. Sounds interesting!

I personally never heard the expression "run the athletes" and "jog the athletes..." sounds even more unnatural.
The only phrase that comes to mind where run is used like that is the idomatic phrase "to run someone through something." This means to practice or rehearse something with someone.
- The director wants us to run through the first act this morning.
- Can you run me through your lines again?

@R-Yeager In this context, yes. And mostly, yes. Jog just means to bounce along at a slow trot. Mostly used for exercise/running, but not always. You can use it metaphorically - such as "the project moved along at a jog, bumping along to its end"
And jog also has a number of other meanings. To jog one's memory (to remind one or oneself of something); to nudge or bump (he jogged my elbow and spilled my wine); and a "jog cart" is a horse racing training cart.
