@NeoinMatrix it might be that asking a question “of someone” is just a particular use of “of” that doesn’t fit very well with most of the ways it is used. I can definitely see how it might look like it means “about someone” to a person learning English. It’s not obvious at all.

To her. You wanted her to answer. It’s the same as saying “I asked her a question.”

@NeoinMatrix Usually, you’d just say “I asked her a question.”
I think we say “of” more than “to” because it sounds less insistent. In English, we can say “I put the question to her” which means to ask in a more direct or confrontational way.

@NeoinMatrix it’s the same as “I asked her a question” , no significant meaning~ just different wording!

@NeoinMatrix It can be used many different ways.
A lot of times it indicates a connection of some kind: a child of his, north of the river, book of poems.
It’s used too many ways for me me explain all of it in general, but I can try to answer specific questions beyond that.

@Deguello yes, what I want is the beyond that.
Please tell me.
I thought the meaning of "OF" was a connection.
I just knew it from the many sentenses in the dictionary.
There is no person to teach me that , you are the first one to teach it to me.
So I think it would be similar to "about", or "from".
Can you tell me more exact meaning of it?

@NeoinMatrix Most of the uses ARE about connections. “About” and “from” are also connections.
“It was a story of/about adventure.”
“He is of/from Hispanic descent.”
A piece of pie is from the whole pie.
It sounds like you understand it pretty well. Asking a question “of someone” is asking for an answer from someone.

The sentence "I asked a question of her" sounds like "I asked (you/him/her/them) a question of her." The objective person seems to be missing in the given sentence. In this case, the preposition "of" is definitely as the same as "about".

@NeoinMatrix As I wrote already, the sentence must be
"I asked him a question of her."
The context seems like this.
A: So, you met her father yesterday.
B:Yes, I did.
A: And...What did you do?
B: I asked him.
A: Of what?
B: I asked a question of her.
In "I asked a question of her",
the objective case ("him") is omitted. But the whole sentence is still natural. Both A and B already knew that objective case "him" was meant. "Him" was simply omitted. And "a question of her" is "a question about her."
