@Crystal_tmn in all honesty, “ameliorate” is one of those english words that even native speakers may not know. I only ever see it in books, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in person. But to answer your question, “ameliorate” means improve in the sense of making something bad less worse. An example is “ameliorate the pain”. “Improve” won’t really work in that example. I’d say it’s close in meaning to the word “alleviate”, which is a lot more common.
e.g. ameliorate/alleviate the pain/suffering

@Crystal_tmn no, it doesn‘t sound natural. Basically, “ameliorate” means to make something bad better. There isn’t anything inherently bad about one’s reading skills. It’s a pretty neutral term. However, if you said, “We must ameliorate the terrible state of our students’ reading skills”, that could work, because “ameliorate” is referring to the “terrible state” and not really the “reading skills”, so to make something bad (terrible
state) better.
But as I said in my previous comment, this isn’t really a word you should be getting so worked up over, because it’s hardly used in everyday life, and you will encounter many native speakers who do not know what it means. I, myself, do not have a very good grasp of the word because I simply never use it.
A piece of advice: use “alleviate” instead of “ameliorate”. They have pretty much the same meaning but “alleviate” is a lot more common.
