Can I freely use "but" instead of "on the contrary" and "in contrast "? I know "on the contrary" and "in contrast" have the different meanings, but is "but" and "on the contrary" are interchangeable and also "but" with "in contrast"?

All of them are used differently from each other.
“In contrast”
In contrast to him, I love you more.
In contrast to you, I don’t like playing games.
People usually do that, but in contrast I do not.
“On the contrary”
On the contrary, I do not like you.
On the contrary I saw them and they did not do that.
You say that she did it, but on the contrary, I say she did not.
—> Both “in contrast” and “on the contrary” are pretty formal and are used when someone has an opposing view that you want to disprove or challenge.
“But”
I wanted to go home, but my boss didn’t let me.
I did do it, but they lost it.
He did not do it, but he still got punished for it.
They left, but they never came back.

I would use “in contrast” when I am comparing/contrasting.
Ex: The photo looks dark(er) in contrast to the light.
Replace “in contrast” with “but” then this sentence will not make sense. There might be interchangeable situations but I can’t think of one right now.
To me, “On the contrary” feels more like “however” than “but”.
“On the contrary” sounds more like a stand alone reply. Like something isn’t true.
Person A: Bugs are ugly
Person B: On the contrary, I think they are cute.
Replace with “but” is ok, but it gives a different feeling to the sentence. “Contrary” like light casual debate. “But” would show strong opinion.
