The vernacular for air traffic control is likely very specific. So the best I can do is a guess. I think he wants the pilot to approach from the opposite direction to land on the correct runway. It appears there is confusion over which runway and the controller is explaining the new heading by telling the pilot he wants to spin him, have him approach from the opposite or at least a different direction.

It seems like the pilots thought they needed to switch the landing runway from 31L to 31R when the heading 040 was given, but the controller's intention was to get the aircraft out of the approach course since he's established on 31L and get him back on the approach to 31R. correct?

@Tkaa0420 Yes, you understand the details better than I do. Spin must apply to removing him from the approach course and putting him back in a circular holding pattern. Flying in a circle could be referred to as a spin.

@Tkaa0420 Your welcome. Intially I had the wrong context. Example, If I was walking one direct and then quickly turn and walk the way I came. I spun around. 180 degrees. I wasn't thinking spin, like standing in one spot and turn in a circle, like kids do to get dizzy. The term is not an exact match for how a plane flies in a circle, so it is likely specific to the vernacular.
Pesky English and its messy contexts.😂

Yeah, some people blame the controller in the comment section for his inappropriate word choice. I know JFK is one of the busiest airport so they need to use plain language to get everything go smoothly. It's funny to see the chaos, though 😁

@Tkaa0420 I worked at a lumberyard years ago. We had a licensed channel and radios. Even a lumberyard was extremely strict on radio protocol. I would think there is even less excuses for air traffic control. In any event, nobody hurt and hopefully lots of lessons learned.😉
