Can "reference" mean "background knowledge"? Because I've heard sentences like "Why should students have the same references as you and me?" and I'm sure the whole talk was about background knowledge.

Well, if you are referring to something you are mentioning something but not explaining it so that implies that the other person knows more about what you are talking about and will be reminded by your reference so kind of?

@kairiazul Thank you! Still a little confused here. Could we say that, in this case, it's kind of like an assumption in an essay, only that an assumption in an essay is more of a point of view, but a reference (in the way that you're explaining it) is more of a fact?

@HappyLark Sure, I'd love to help you out! I was a bit confused about your context of the word. Yes, a reference is a solid verbal connection to something- it could be referencing a joke, a book, a situation, etc. If you are still confused; do you have another example of your context?

@kairiazul Thank you for being so patient with me, especially when I'm not even sure what I was talking about :P. Allow me to try again :). Let's say I'm giving a talk about today's China, but since I'm not sure when people are going to hear this talk and things could change very quickly, so I mention the date (say it's 5th Feb. 2017), assuming that people who hear the date will have the background knowledge of what has happened around the time. So in this case, could I say "To make sure we have the same reference, today is 5th Feb. 2017" ?
