"might as well" is used when doing X is convenient or if there's no better option, basically.
"You're at the gym, you might as well work out."
"had better" means you should do it
"You had better feed your cats before you leave for the day."

That is true, absolutely, but I think mostly they're just used in different situations.
One feels more like "I'm going to do this because I've got nothing better to do"
and the other feels like "It would be better if I did this"
