It depends on whether you would use was or were in the sentence
If i was going i wouldnt dress like that
If i were to go i wouldnt dress like that
If i was happy i wouldnt cry
If i were to be happy would i be crying?

@gxbbyf Thank you for explaining !
Then "If I was rich, I would buy that ring" and "If I were rich, I would buy that ring." are the same?
Then "If I was rich, I would buy that ring" and "If I were rich, I would buy that ring." are the same?

@Goanna I'll try to keep it simple 😉
"If I was..." and "If I were..." both mean the same thing. The difference is that "If I was..." is actually incorrect but it's used so much that it is considered correct by most native speakers. The word "was" is strictly for past tense only: "I am tired." "I WAS tired."
"were" is also used in the past ("We are eating." "We were eating.") but it's also used for what's called the subjunctive. The subjunctive is used to express uncertainty, things like wishes, desires, hope, etc. and with words like "if."
"If I were you, I'd take the job." I'm not you, I'll never be you. So I must use the subjunctive here.
"If I were a rich man I'd buy whatever I want!"
This is a wish or desire. I'm not rich, but I'd like to be so I can buy whatever I want.
Sorry if this is a lot! I hope it helps!
