"for his sake" = to be considerate towards
"on his behalf" = to do something (instead of him doing it)

@Tomo97 For his sake = in order to help him or do something good. You come clean because you feel guilty and want to save him.
On his behalf = for him because he can’t or won’t do it. He’s unable or unwilling to come clean so you admit it instead.
