Based on the patterns shaping the history of the planet and our species, we can make forecasts about the situations in which our descendants will find themselves. 是什麼意思

What puzzles me is the expression “the situations in which our descendants will find themselves”. Is it a redundant way to describe “the situations of our descendants”?
