When I translate them to hungarian they both mean the same ("füst"), but in my english book they are written as two different things. So i'd like to ask, what's the difference between these two words?

Smoke is generalized as the air that comes from a fire. So one can smell smoke or see smoke. But fumes are something that you smell.
E.g. I noticed a fire in my kitchen, after the fumes from the smoke started to make me cough.

Smoke is generalized as the air that comes from a fire. So one can smell smoke or see smoke. But fumes are something that you smell.

Smoke is visible and normally from fire or something burning. Fumes can be invisible. They are not only caused by fire. Chemicals such as gasoline and paint give off fumes.
Cigarette smoke might sting your eyes.
Fumes from paint might make you dizzy. Your previous answers were good. I just added examples.
