I want to say that I discovered that James is on the ship with us.

@bassel27 "On the ship" is the most appropriate if you're saying that you have discovered that, "On board" can be used but not in an anxious manner like you're implying here, BUT "Abroad" has a complete different meaning, it means ( outside of ones own country/ في الغربة )
