They are similar in meaning, but there is a subtle difference.
"I've known John for 6 months" suggests you have known him throughout that time, spending time with him on multiple occasions.
"I met John 6 months ago" is more general. It may have just been a one-time meeting/occurrence or you may have spent time together on multiple occasions.

What should I answer?
1. “I met john 6 months ago” or
2. “I’ve known John for 6 months”

@Livia_Martins Both are acceptable, but #1 is better in this case because the question specifically relates to when you first met/saw each other.
