"My favourite animals are dogs" is referring to the person saying that dogs are their favourite animal out of all animals they know.
"I like dogs" is referring to the person saying they just like dogs. It's not their favourite animal but they still like dogs.

when something is your "favorite" that means that it is the your most preferred, most liked, and all around, best for you.
My favorite ice cream flavor is vanilla = Out of all the ice cream flavors, I like vanilla the most.
When you say that you just "like" something, the saying has a general tone to it.
I like red clothes = There are many colors that I like on clothes, and red is one of them.
