these questions are actually grammatically incorrect. for the first sentence,you would say "my favorite animal is a dog" for the second, you'd say "my favorite animals are dogs." The two sentences don't have much different meaning, other than the fact that the second sentence Is plural, meaning more than 1 dog.

Both sentences provide the same meaning, however they are structured incorrectly.
The correct way is "Dogs are my favorite animal" When referring to something as a group, use its' plural, for instance:
"I love dogs!"
"My mother doesn't like cats."
additionally, "is" can only be used for singulars, not groups. for groups and plurals use "are"
