It's a very poetic phrase!
This phrase works because taking up a lot of "space" in someone's life means that you are important to them, and that they do things to accomodate your needs. Also, having a "big" personality implies that you do whatever you want, and don't feel constrained by societal expectations.
It means she had changed her personality and lifestyle to suit him, and that doing so had caused her emotional harm. It implies she's no longer her true self -- her true self has been shrunk, or made made smaller. Despite this, however, she is not convenient enough for him. He wants her to change herself (shrink herself) even more. This will allow him to take up even more space. He wants to be the most important person in their relationship.
