Is this a question about grammar or culture? The grammar is fine. If someone is an American citizen and of Asian heritage, they may choose to think of themselves as Asian-American or they may not. But they would be objectively defined (say, by the government) as Asian-Americans, as long as they are (now) citizens.

That’s to say, a Chinese who was naturalized American after his/her immigration to the U.S are officially considered as an Asian American. However, they themselves may not think so, right?

@littlerita yes that is right. In their heart they may still think they are Chinese, but if someone was talking about “issues that affect Asian Americans” they would be included.
