2. "The Tokyo Olympics was taking place in 2020, but it was postponed until 2021" - to take place in the past progressive form sounds odd in this case. It's contradictory because in the first clause you say that it was taking place and then in the second clause you say that it didn't place - it was postponed.
"The Tokyo Olympics was going to take place in 2020, but it was postponed until 2021"

The first is a conditional sentence. The Olympics would take place if some criteria were met.
The second is an indicative sentence. The Olympics did take place. However, the second sentence should read "The Tokyo Olympics took place in 2020."
