@Agnes_oaycp6MAD4h7FM All the modal verbs can be inverted.
Commonly inverted:
Can, Could
Shall, Should
Will, Would
Now a little old-fashioned:
Ought
Must
Need

Meaning is the same. 'Had I...' is more old-fashioned.
If I had only screwed the lid on tightly, the water wouldn't have spilled.
= Had I only screwed the lid on tightly, the water wouldn't have spilled.
In modern English, only 'to be', the auxiliary form of 'to have' and the modal verbs are inverted to form questions.
E.g 'Are you coming?'
'Has he eaten anything?'
'Can you pass the salt?'
'Should we tell him?'
In older English, other verbs and the other meanings of 'to have' are also inverted to form questions. Some of these older usages survive in poetry, nursery rhymes and dialects.
'Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?'
'What say you?'

@lucyhollings Are there any other verbs except from had, were and should that can be inverted?
- 中文 (簡體)
@lucyhollings I can say this form is still in use nowadays, because my university admission team replied me with “should instituitions decide to…, this will be available on result day.”

@Agnes_oaycp6MAD4h7FM 'should' and 'had' are special, because they can also mean 'if' when they are inverted.
should = future if
e.g should this event come to pass, it will alter the course of history
had = past if
had I wanted to kill you, you would be dead.
'would that' also means 'if only'
would that I were young again
These uses of 'should', 'had' and 'would' are uncommon now.
