I have a sensitive question.
It is about the murder of George Floyd.
I'm using a translator, so I'm sorry if I'm rude.
My impression is that of course cops are bad guys, but George Floyd did bad things too.
He was a repeat offender, and the autopsy showed that the cause of death was drugs, not asphyxiation.
In my country, we do not discriminate on the basis of skin color.
It doesn't matter if the person who committed the crime is black, white, Asian, or whoever.
So I was surprised to hear that they built a statue to honor him like a hero.
It's sad when people die.
But I don't think he is a hero.
There are many other black heroes.
There are also many respectable people who are doing their best for the world.

What I think about this incident is that it is a sad case of bad things happening together.
Again, the cop is of course at fault.
It's also sad that black people are discriminated against and treated badly.
But I can't understand why that makes him a hero, no matter how many times I watch the news.
I was even more surprised when I heard that a huge compensation was paid to his family.
Do most Americans still think of him as a hero?
I only know him from the news, so I would like to know what people living in the US think about him.

Omg! This is such a cool question 🤩 Ok! George is seen as a hero because he represents ( represents means being the face or symbol of something) an African American in America. African Americans are black people born in America. Since he is a representation we are not looking at him and his past. We are looking at the community he is part of, the black community. He was a hero because he was an African American that was “sacrificed” to help the world be more aware of what is happening to people of color. In the U.S people that are part of this group are called “the minority”, along with Asians, people that are part of LGBTQ, and any other non-white races. This is because they are the oppressed, they’re voices have to fight to be heard. George Floyd’s death was a turning point in U.S history. It was a fight that led to death and change. And you DID NOT sound rude at all.

I’m going to chime in because I have a completely different perspective. First, the medical examiner determined that heart disease and drug use CONTRIBUTED to his death, but were not the primary cause. Had the police officer not choked him to death, George Floyd would still be alive.
That said, I don’t think he is a hero, nor do a lot of people. However, the fact of the matter is that no matter what you’ve done, police officers aren’t supposed to kill you. George Floyd doing bad things in the past or even when he got arrested/murdered is completely beside the point. And him being murdered is why his family received compensation. It’s also why what happened to him has received a lot of news coverage and attention. It’s not to portray him as a hero, but to bring awareness to the very real and life-threatening dangers Black people face every day.
Also, I have to say that I disagree about him being a “sacrifice”. In my opinion, that term is very dehumanizing and only leads to the issue being sugarcoated. And while change may have resulted from his murder and the subsequent protests, I don’t think it was a turning point. Police took the lives of thousands of Black people before George Floyd and are still doing it now.
Lastly, @na20na there is discrimination everywhere. And although you may not see it, it does exist. I think you should do more research and speak to more people of color/people who do not look like you to become more informed on George Floyd and the topic of racism/discrimination in general.
