If you were talking to someone at that moment while looking at the mountain (or in present tense) you could say
"I can see the highest mountain in the world from here!" But if you were telling someone what had already happened (or in past tense) you could say "I could see the highest mountain in the world just across from where I was standing" or "Across from where I was standing I could see the highest mountain in the world."
